Summer Learning Journey Day 1 Activity 2 Week 1

Imagine that you were on board one of the wakas. On your blog, write a short letter to a friend telling them about your voyage to New Zealand. In the letter be sure to tell them how you feel about moving to a new country. If it was me, I would have felt really nervous…

Dear Martha
I've been on this waka for over 15 days now. I was excited to be on the sea and start with this journey to explore and find new land. The sun is hot and baking, the boat is cramped, I miss have a hot meal and only eat raw fish and dried foods. I also miss the warmth of a fire and sharing of stories as we always do and this makes me miss my family even more. We saw some shark fins swimming by in the water and we were a little scared. We are hoping to find land soon.

Setting Sail

The first sailors that came to New Zealand they were very brave to come to a new land. They left there homes and they across a thousands of oceans in a boat called a "waka " to reach New Zealand.

For example I would write something along these lines:
    Dear Mary,
This is my 10th day aboard this boat and it has been raining for the past 3 days. I am feeling so tired and I miss home and you. This adventure is testing my strengths and I am starting to doubt my decision to come. I am excited about discover a new land but also, I am finding the journey to get there very difficult and challenging...."

Could you do something similar to that and let me know?

Furthermore you added a picture of the waka to create a visual image of it; and not only that, you explained how the first sailors used the waka to arrive in New Zealand.

  4. Hi Nickaela
Great job on completing this activity, I like how you included some information about the food they would have been eating, such as salted meat and vegetables, because fruit would have rotted on their long journey and does not taste as good once salted. I have a question though, what kind of people do you think they would have sent on the waka? would they have sent children and elders, or just the young adults for a hunting/expedition party?
